Alzhimers medication can not cure the disease but they can delay and improve on the symptoms of the Alzimers disease (Alsheimers).

The mecicines available today to Alzhimers patients affect the signal substances of the brain. Some are enzyme blockers:

• Donepezil (Aricept),
• Ggalantamin (Reminyl)
• Rivastigmin (Exelon)

Memantin (Ebixa), instead removes some of the negative effects of the signal substance glutamate. It also slows down the production of glutamate.

All these medicines will improve on the cognitive functions but have a limited effect. In many cases there is no effect at all. It has not been proven that these medicines will change the course of the Alzheimers disease on the whole. Patients with Alzheimers need a large amount of daycare, activating and training.
